The question that underlies this book will challenge us greatly in the coming years. We have to bear in mind however that we are part of a biological cycle. I am convinced that the proximity to animals, even to the ones we use for food, provides more understanding of their needs than when we turn away from them. Only if we raise the living and educational standards of all humans, can our awareness increase, and this is the best support for animal welfare. Moreover we must demand species-appropriate husbandry based on cutting-edge science. And we should expect from others only what we are ready to contribute ourselves. Yet there remains a dangerous logic which is hard to break: that the strongest prevails. This does not, however, exclude the risk that in the end the strongest destroys himself. More…
