A first step: Reduce the use of animals for food
To answer the question for what purpose and how humans might use animals challenged me a lot and raised some new questions that I cannot answer. One thing is clear, the relationship between humans and animals is in transition. But much time will still be needed to put new awareness into practice. It’s a long way to go from thinking differently to acting differently. Furthermore, millions of humans still depend on fish or bush meat (illegal hunting of wild animals, e.g. primates) for their survival. Given their poverty they barely have a choice how to use animals and nature. Actually they are often forced to clear part of the jungle and to destroy the habitat of orangutans or other animals in order to ensure some meals for their large family. Thus, poverty reduction is of the utmost importance for better dealing with animals.
What about plants? Comforting trees, curative herbs: As plants have so much influence on us they, too, must have personality, intelligence and sentience. Personally, I deem it justifiable to use plants as long as we respect their forms of life. Organic growing of plants corresponds to my ideas. The fact that plants and animals have to lose their lives for our nutrition and health is surely inevitable, but we are in charge of taking care of their welfare and it is up to us to exercise moderation.
